It's Not a Netbook, It's a Windows Mobile Terminal

by jfrot 18. November 2008 20:29

RedflyNetbooks--super-small notebooks designed primarily for Web surfing, e-mail, and light applications--are all the rage these days. But as portable as they are, they depend primarily on Wi-Fi for wireless Internet access--and Wi-Fi hotspots aren't as ubiquitous as cell phone networks.

Powered down, Celio's Redfly devices look sort of like netbooks. But they are actually terminals for Windows Mobile handsets that you hook up via either Bluetooth or a USB cable. Without the smartphone, they do nothing; with it, though, they let you do almost anything you'd do on your handset, but with a larger display and keyboard.

Netbook Smackdown: Compare the Six Top Netbooks

by jfrot 14. November 2008 19:57

Microsoft touts new online store as a netbook complement

by jfrot 14. November 2008 19:43

Microsoft launched in the U.S. this week its online software store and is touting it as one way for netbook PC users who don’t have optical drives to more easily obtain software.

The Microsoft Store, which opened for business here on November 13, allows users to purchase and download Microsoft hardware and software — games, keyboards, games and gaming consoles, Windows (client and server versions), Office and development tools. It doesn’t stock business applications like SQL Server, System Center, SharePoint Server, etc., which tend to be products purchased via resellers and/or volume-license agreements.

Acer Aspire One netbook

by jfrot 12. November 2008 18:31

Acer Aspire One netbookThe Aspire One netbook is a very tiny notebook computer designed for basic computer tasks (Web surfing, e-mail, basic Office-like tasks). The 2.2-lb. Aspire One includes built-in wireless networking and a Webcam, runs on an Intel Atom processor (1.6 GHz), and has 512MB of RAM (upgradeable to 1GB). It runs on the Linus Linux Lite operating system, but for some reason the version we had was running Windows XP (we could have had an older version, the newer ones might have the Linux OS).

by jfrot 6. November 2008 21:18

Windows 7Microsoft developers hope to put a stop to Windows' ever-growing footprint for its seventh iteration, due for final release around 2010. Officials demoed a version running on a netbook, a small notebook form factor growing in popularity. Apple has launched an all-new MacBook which "eliminates more than 60 percent of the parts, and it's much stronger," according to CEO Steve Jobs.

Jobs, announcing a range of new laptops at a product launch in California, said the new MacBook offers a 5x boost in graphics performance over previous MacBooks, together with 5 hours of battery life. It also features corner-to-corner glass, a precision aluminium unibody enclosure, an LED display, next-gen graphics and a multi-touch glass trackpad.
